Camp 3 is deep into the cave perhaps about 4 miles into
the earth. The
passages leading to this site are a maze that you
can't believe could exist until
you have seen it for yourself. Imagine the
thousands of streets in a city during
a blackout and someone has removed all the street
signs and there is no moon
in the sky to even let you realize that you are
always going in the same
direction. Here we are sitting on benches made from
gypsum mud and at a
table that is also made from the mud. It is
covered with a piece of plastic to
serve as a table cloth. We stopped after 7
hours of hiking to eat and rest for
a short while. Meals in the cave are almost
always hot meals. Made from
boiled cave water, tea if the most common drink.
Canned fish and cheese are
a regular part of the diet along with liver paste
on bread. These foods all
keep well and are transported well in the cave,
they are very compact.
